John 19:30. What Christ is alluding to here is the achieved salvation of the individuals. This means when we are spared, we don't need to put out consumed saccrifices to Him. It is no longer required in light of the fact that Christ kicked the bucket for us, which removed the evildoings of our wrongdoing. He did this because of extraordinary love for us. This is exemplified in John 3:16 For God so cherished the world that he gave his just begotton child that who so ever confidence in him will have eternall life!. That refrain is important to us, or ought to be, on the grounds that as it were, one could base his/her relationship with the Lord upon it. The explanation is on the grounds that God adored us so much that he did that for us so that is the least that we could do. In Genesis 3:15 it says that we will be rebuffed for our wrongdoings. Truly, that is valid, yet God will pardon and never revisit them in the event that we apologize. You see this is absurd without Jesus biting the dust for our transgressions. In Romans 5:6-8 it says that Christ passed on for us all. Indeed, even the awful ones, ALL. This is a indication of the Victory that Christ had won a triumph here. The explanation is in light of the entirety of the lives that he spared and will later be spared. In Romans 5 it says that Jesus passed on for All Sinners! We are for the most part delinquents so his demise was for all. At the point when Jesus says that It is done, he can likewise be reffering to the more seasoned expectations of Christs' life. There is one specifically that it might have been discussing in Isaiah. That is the one where Isaiah discusses the life of Jesus and the crucifiction, in exceptionally short and brief detail. The languishing wherein Jesus took over us endured all as the night progressed, and afterward in the first part of the day the pushed a blade into His side to check whether he was alive. After the water poored out of His side, you can say that it is authoritatively finished. In my heart it isn't totally finished, only that of that time. Jesus will in every case live in my heart and not until the last days is it over in my heart. Much has been expounded on the deficiency of the city-soul similarity in setting up what equity is, and further about how Plato neglects to enough interface his vision of equity to the traditional one as can't address the first test. I intend to show that the city-soul relationship is in truth convincing, or possibly that is it adequately sufficient to permit us to proceed onward to a conversation of how Platonic equity thinks about to customary equity. By then I will endeavor to show that Platonic equity is applicable to the test presented to Socrates, and that in spite of issues with the opposite the Platonic and customary perspectives are adequately adjusted to permit Socrates to reason that he has demonstrated that it is smarter to be simply than uncalled for. Vlastos, and others, contend that depicting the city as simply will be basically a speculation about its individuals, thus the city isn't simply similarly that an individual is simply. I wish to contend, as Wilson does, that there are different reason for Plato to credit equity to the city. As Wilson puts it, ââ¬Å"[Platoââ¬â¢s] focal inquiry isn't the logical philosopherââ¬â¢s question ââ¬ËWhat does ââ¬Ëjusticeââ¬â¢ mean? ââ¬â¢, yet the considerable inquiry ââ¬ËWhat is equity? ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ . In this way, it isn't right to scrutinize the Republic as one would reprimand a proper contention towards a definition, as Plato is really scanning for what equity really is. Wilsonââ¬â¢s specialist allegory is useful: Plato is exploring the idea of equity simply like specialists ask into the idea of an ailment. Specialists notice an assortment of frameworks and become persuaded they are brought about by a solitary hidden condition, to which they characteristic a name. In the long run somebody finds this hidden condition and the underlying supposition that is supported. Thusly, something like polio can be comprehended, not by exploring the importance of the word polio however by taking a gander at potential instances of it and by examining its tendency. Plato, Wilson contends, is accomplishing something comparative with equity. Would could it be that makes the association between equity in a city and equity in an individual conceivable? To stay away from the issues with the city-soul similarity, it is significant that equity and different ideals not be found in the city just in a subordinate way, that is, just as a speculation about the cityââ¬â¢s individuals. Fortunately, Plato can maintain a strategic distance from this strategy. Wilson suggests that Plato does as such by likening the basic highlights of the spirit and of the city. At that point, when some ethicalness V is demonstrated by specific attributes C of a city, and by those equivalent qualities C of a spirit, and that after request we find that the basic component of both the city and the spirit that offers ascend to C is the equivalent auxiliary element S, at that point like the specialist we can finish up with assurance that V is S. Regardless of whether Plato effectively likens the auxiliary highlights of the spirit and the city is a huge inquiry, yet he surely believes that he does. I don't intend to go into a conversation of this different inquiry here, yet simply wish to have indicated that the utilization of the city-soul similarity is superbly sensible, since it gives a sufficient technique to exploring the idea of equity. Another potential issue Plato faces is the association of Platonic equity to traditional perspectives on equity. The first test is to demonstrate that it is better for a man to be simply than vile, paying little heed to whatever else. This inquiry would surely not be adequately replied by concocting another meaning of equity that was detached from customary perspectives on equity, for instance if the new definition allowed acts that usually would be viewed as uncalled for; it is fundamental for Plato to show an association among Platonic and traditional equity. This issue comes most distinctly from Sachs, who states that Plato needs to demonstrate two unique things: ) A Platonically just individual will consistently act in expectedly just manners b) Someone who is routinely simply will essentially likewise be Platonically just as it were, Sachs is of the conclusion that Plato must compare Platonic equity to customary equity in the two headings, so any individual who is one will fundamentally be the other. Sachs claims Plato knows about the need to demonstrate a), however doesn't work superbly o f doing as such, yet never specifies any need to show that b) is additionally obvious. I would contend that demonstrating b) is superfluous to set up Platoââ¬â¢s contention. Plato wishes to show that it is in every case better to carry on fairly, and Sachââ¬â¢s point is that Plato needs to show that somebody who is routinely simply will consistently be in an ideal situation than somebody who is traditionally unjustifiable, thus that individual who is ordinarily simply should be Platonically just. In any case, I feel this isn't really expected of Plato, as it is conceivable to consider situations where somebody who meets the meaning of routinely simply isn't really an only individual in the manner Socrates and the gathering are thinking about. As Sachs depicts, the obscene or regular origination of equity is the possibility of not doing certain demonstrations. As per this definition, it is conceivable to act in a customarily just manner not just appear to be simply, however act such that makes one only while in certainty being uncalled for so that even the individuals who hold the regular perspective on equity would concur that such an individual was shameful. For instance consider a ââ¬Å"incompetent evildoerâ⬠. Such an individual may have awful expectations, yet each and every time he does an awful thing he neglects to finish the activity as well as neglects to do as such by any stretch of the imagination. Each activity he does is a simply activity, and he never does any activities that are viewed as treacherous, yet he has horrible goals and continually wants to hurt others. He not just appears to be ordinarily just to everybody around him, he really is traditionally in light of the fact that this revolting, ordinary perspective on equity is essentially worried about how he acts. It appears, in any case, that he is definitely not a fair individual. Plato doesn't have to show that this man is somebody who is Platonically just, and he obviously isn't. In this manner, Plato isn't required to exhibit b), in light of the fact that there are a few people who meet the meaning of routinely just however are not simply as in Socrates and friends are examining they need to build up that it is smarter to be simply, and would all concur that the inept criminal isn't simply despite the fact that he actually meets the traditional definition. Then again, it is significant that Plato demonstrate a). From the start, it appears to be totally conceivable that somebody with inward clairvoyant amicability might be fit for taking, killing, or submitting other low activities. This would absolutely refute Platoââ¬â¢s contention, as it would do nothing to show that everybody should act in what Glaucon and Adeimantus consider as a correct way. So it is important to show that somebody who is Platonically simply will likewise be customarily simply, that is, everybody who has an all around requested soul should consistently act in manners that we consider as just. I contend that a sufficient verification of an) exists for Plato, regardless of whether he himself does exclude it. As Demos says, ââ¬Å"mathematicians frequently skip steps in a deduction, thinking them obviousâ⬠, and despite the fact that Plato may neglect to give the verification of a) himself, he is as yet advocated in trusting it. Demos gives a decent method of moving toward the resistance of this point. Essentially, the spirit of the Platonically just individual is managed by reason, which is both a longing and a valuation for reality and of the great. This great which reason focuses on includes equity, and focusing on the great methods likewise focusing on the creation of beneficial things. In this way, an individual focusing on equity thinks about equity uniquely, yet is worried about equity being typified in people all in all. For the spirit to be sound requires its motivation to be satisfied, and reasonââ¬â¢s concern is that the acceptable ought to be exemplified all over. Being deep down just methods needing everybody to have his due, and that implies not submitting the sorts of activities that are thought of as customarily unjustifiable. While this doesn't altogether demonstrate a), show can't help suspecting that the points of a deep down, Platonically just individual will expect them to be remotely, and in this manner traditionally, similarly too. Annas follows Sachs in demanding that Plato neglects to demonstrate an), and further imagines that there is no conceivable connection among Platonic and ordinary equity. One specific analysis is Platoââ¬â¢s perspective on truth-telling, which she sees as devastatingly conflicting. As she brings up, Plato would take into consideration the Guardians to once in a while lie, yet the common laborers may not. She sees a major issue with the way that the Guardians ââ¬Å"cannot bear to be misdirected, yet they in some cases mislead othersâ⬠. This analysis, be that as it may, appears to lay on a clearly very severe deontological see. I accept that Platoââ¬â¢s thought of the periodic rightness of lying fits splendidly well with customary ethical quality. Consider: I) Truth-telling when all is said in done is acceptable ii) Lying is once in a while worthy I would contend that regular profound quality would acknowledge both I) and ii), or at any rate, since certain individuals probably won't acknowledge ii), that it is at any rate an open inquiry of traditional ethical quality of whether ii) is satisfactory. Certain occasions, it appears, lying is a clearly right act, for example, the instance of the killer at the d Ellis Besthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02531806416892216155noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341690322264343012.post-46904786862117978582020-08-17T20:28:00.001-07:002020-08-17T20:28:05.815-07:00Guide on Individual Counseling Guide on Individual Counseling There was a time when counseling was associated with those who have extreme mental and psychological problems. It was described by Burks and Steffire as a way to âhelp clients understand and clarify their views of their lifespace, and to learn to reach their self-determined goals through meaningful, well-informed choices and through resolution or problems of an emotional or interpersonal natureâ.Feltham and Dryden further added to that, describing counseling as a ârelationship characterized by the application of psychological theories and a recognized set of communication skillsâ. The American Counseling Association gave a clearer definition when it said that counseling is a âprofessional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals.âIn simpler terms, counseling has been defined as the act of offering or providing clients with advice which will, in turn, be used as a guide in making important decisions. The advice is offered by professionals known as counselors in a counseling session or meeting agreed upon by both parties. It used to be that people resort to counseling because there is a problem that needs to be solved, and that they may come across the solution to that problem while speaking with their counselors. These days, there doesnât have to be a pressing problem that needs to be solved before a client approaches a counselor. Counseling can be undertaken even if there is no problem that needs an immediate solution. In order to recognize the importance of counseling, it would be a good idea to take a look at the results that can be achieved from counseling. The client becomes more self-aware, gaining deeper insight of herself . This understanding promotes greater self-acceptance and appreciation, thus encouraging her to further improve on her strengths and good points, and change for the better where necessary. The clientâs set of values and beliefs, which were thought to be permanent and set in stone, are challenged and become more open to change. This makes more room for flexibility, allowing the client to be more adaptable and adjustable to change. As a result, the person is more open to changing her way of thinking, behaving and feeling.Along with self-awareness, the client also becomes more aware of the people around her. She gains a better understanding of other people â" why they do what they do, what motivates them and what is important to them. This increased sensitivity and understanding paves the way towards building and maintaining stronger relationships. The client will be empowered to set goals and go about accomplishing them. Counseling helps them gain clarity and urge them to come up wit h strategies and ideas that will let them achieve their goals. The clientâs health will also benefit. Many claim that, after counseling sessions, they feel significantly lighter, and their stress levels significantly reduced. The client obtains the opportunity to make amends for past wrongs that she has committed, or forgive wrongs done by others against her. However, that is no longer the case, as counseling can also be sought by those who do not have what most people would refer to as âbigâ problems.MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT COUNSELINGBefore we go any further, let us first address some mistaken notions about what counseling really is.#1 Counseling tells you what decisions to make.Itâs true that counseling involves the provision of advice. However, this advice is only offered as a form of guidance. At the end of the day, it is the client who will make the decision, basing on the realizations arrived to as a result of the guidance offered during counseling.#2 Counseling will sort out all your problems.Again, counseling is not a solution. Rather, it is a means to arrive at a solution. Do not expect to have your problems worked out if you spend time with a professional counselor, and do not go to a counselor fully expecting him to hand out so lutions for your problems.#3 Counseling works in the same way for everyone.Counseling does not have a one-size-fits-all approach. Any professional counselor would tell you that there different circumstances being experienced by different clients. This means there has to be different approaches towards solving each one of them. Itâs actually very rare to find two clients facing the exact same problems.INDIVIDUAL COUNSELINGCounseling comes in many different types and forms, depending on several factors. They can be differentiated as to the reason or purpose of counseling, such as career counseling, grief counseling, couples counseling and family counseling. When it comes to the mode of delivery or method of execution, we can classify them as either face-to-face sessions, sessions conducted over the telephone or via other forms of correspondence. However, the most common classification would be whether it is done in groups or one-on-one.Individual vs. Group CounselingAs the phrase i mplies, group counseling involves a group or people faced with the same or similar issues. They will put their heads together and work together to tackle those issues. A classic example would be group counseling for recovering alcoholics. In some cases, couples in the middle of divorce or a child custody dispute are also likely to undergo group counseling, working under the assumption that there is strength in numbers. Family counseling also falls under the group counseling category, since it involves more than one member of the family and the counselor working together to face an issue that affects all of them.It is different with individual counseling where there are only two people in the room: the counselor and the client. The focus is the individual â" his concerns, his issues, and his goals. It involves one-on-one dialogues between the client and the counselor, and they take on the role of partners. The decision on whether to choose group counseling or individual counseling wi ll largely depend on the preference of the client, and the nature of the problem or issues that he or she is facing.Advantages and Disadvantages of Individual CounselingSome prefer individual counseling more than group counseling and vice versa, and there are a lot of factors affecting that preference. The reasons for this may be determined once we have identified the advantages of individual counseling.+ Individual counseling guarantees confidentiality. Confidentiality is an essential element of counseling. Professional counselors are just like medical practitioners in the sense that they, too, are bound by patient-doctor confidentiality terms. They are not supposed to divulge any information shared by their clients with them. In one-on-one counseling sessions, there is a greater assurance that any information shared by the client will remain between the two of them. This is not something that is guaranteed in a group counseling session, considering that there are other people, bes ides you and the counselor, who will also be privy to everything that will be discussed during the session.+ Individual counseling is more flexible. Counselors have different approaches in conducting these therapy sessions. If there is only one client, it will be easier to tailor the approach in a way that is most suitable for the client, unlike in a group setting, where you have to consider more than one person. Counselors will find more freedom in the individual setup, since they can work on isolated issues as they see fit.+ Individual counseling ensures focused attention of the counselor. There is only one client, so the counselorâs full attention will be on that client for the duration of their scheduled counseling session.+ Individual counseling allows clients to be comfortable. There are many people who are not comfortable talking about their personal problems in groups, even if the other people in the group are already known to them. The tendency of this discomfort is that they wonât be able to open up fully during counseling and they will tend to withhold some information. When it is just the client and the counselor, with no one else listening in and probably judging, these people will be able to express themselves more fully and comfortably.Of course, it would not be fair not to consider the disadvantages of individual counseling. There is a high risk of getting too personal or emotionally involved. Remember that there is only the counselor and the client working together. There is a risk that the client will end up relying greatly on the counselor and developing an emotional attachment to her, and vice versa. This could be a potential problem when it comes to objectivity in making decisions. The results are too focused on one person only: the client. Since the client is the one sharing experiences, her input is the only one that will be taken into consideration during the discussion. Others are excluded. For example, if an individual who is unde rgoing relationship trouble with a spouse decided to undergo individual counseling, the issues are tackled without the input or point-of-view of the other person involved in the relationship. As a result, the decision that will be made at the end is likely to be a bit one-sided. Counselors may have limited knowledge. There is a possibility that the counselor does not have prior knowledge or experience about an issue that is being dealt with by the client. If they were in a group setting, the counselor can derive input from other people with similar situations in the group and make deductions from there. As it is, there is no one else in an individual counseling setting, so this limitation comes up strongly.TIPS ON UNDERGOING INDIVIDUAL COUNSELINGBe prepared. Physically, mentally, and psychologically. When you sign up for counseling, expect that you will be sharing a bit of yourself. You may even end up baring your soul. For many people, this is a difficult thing to do, which is why t here is a need for mental preparation. You have to be prepared to expose yourself to another person, who may even be a complete stranger prior to your first meeting as counselor and client. You should also be ready for your beliefs, values, and preconceptions to be challenged. And they will be, so make sure you are prepared for it. Counseling also involves tapping into oneâs emotions, so be prepared to express your emotions. This may be especially difficult for individuals with closed-off personalities and introverts who do not express themselves openly. But if you are determined to make a success out of your individual counseling, then you should make an effort at this.Know what you need. From the beginning, you have to be fully aware of the problem that you want help with. You have to be clear on your goals in undergoing counseling and spending money on it. What do you want to accomplish? What do you expect from the counselor? What will it take for the counseling session to be a s uccess?Knowing this will give you a push in the right direction. Always keep your eye on that goal so you can move directly towards it.Find a good counselor or therapist.Make sure that the person who will be your counselor is someone you can trust. Look into her:Qualifications. Look into the basics, such as educational credentials and certifications.Reputation. Tap into her professional circles and see whether she has had any problems with clients before, especially concerning confidentiality.Track record. You should also look into who her other clients are, both in the past and the present. You may even ask other clients how she is as a counselor.Do not hesitate to ask questions; that is your right. If, during the first meeting, you do not feel comfortable with the counselor, it is your prerogative to keep looking for another one. Do not force yourself. Besides, keep in mind that, in order for the counseling therapy to be successful, you have to be able to build rapport with your c ounselor. If the signs point to the opposite direction, donât hesitate to look for someone else.Keep an open mind. This may be difficult for many, but at least try. You enter counseling to hear what you are supposed to, not what you want to. Going in, you are assumed to be in a state of readiness to hear and face truths that may hurt you or may be hard for you to accept. That is part of counseling.Along with keeping an open mind, you have to learn to adapt some willingness â" willingness to effect changes, willingness to adapt, and willingness to accept that, perhaps, you were wrong about something.Be patient.Counseling is a process, which means there are steps or progressions. You cannot expect results or changes overnight, no matter how much you wish for it. A single two-hour counseling session may pass by without any tangible results. Again, there is no definite period or number of hours for an issue to be resolved. You need to be patient and give time for the results to show u p.You also have to know that counseling can go from a few weeks to several years, depending on the nature of the counseling or the specific need of the client. You also have to be prepared to undergo counseling for an indefinite period, if necessary.Make that call. Set up that appointment. This is probably the most difficult step â" the first one. You have been contemplating going to counseling for a problem that has been bugging you for a long time, giving you sleepless nights and restless days, and draining energy out of your lifein general. You might also apprehensive about talking to a stranger about your problems. Or you could be having some doubts about whether the session will be able to help you in the long run or not. Maybe you have trust issues, because what if others find out that you are seeing a counselor and undergoing therapy?Get over these fears. Face the fact that you have issues and problems, and that you need help, and you need it RIGHT NOW. Call up the counselor that you have researched thoroughly on and set that appointment. Once you do, make sure that you keep it. McDonalds sells various fast food items and soft drinks including, burgers, chicken, salads, fries, and ice cream. Many McDonalds restaurants have included a playground for children and advertising geared toward children, with a particular emphasis on comfort: introducing lounge areas and fire places, and eliminating hard plastic chairs and tables. Each McDonalds restaurant is operated by a franchisee or the corporation itself. The corporations revenues come from the rent, royalties and fees paid by the franchisees, as well as sales in company-operated restaurants. McDonalds revenues grew 27% over the three years ending in 2007 to $22.8billion, and 9% growth in operating income to $3.9 billion.1 COMPANY BACKGROUND The business began in 1940, with a restaurant opened by brothers Dickand Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California. Their introduction of the Speed Service System in 1948 established the principles of the modern fast-food restaurant The original mascot of McDonalds was a man with a chefs hat on top of a hamburger shaped head whose name was sppeedd. Sppeedd was eventually replaced with Ronald McDonald in 1963. The present corporation dates its founding to the opening of a franchised restaurant by Ray Kroc, in Des Plaines, Illinois on April 15, 1955. Kroc later purchased the McDonald brothers equity in the company and led its worldwide expansion and the company became listed on the public stock markets in 1965.With the expansion of McDonalds into many international markets, the company has become a symbol of globalization and the spread of the American way of life. Its prominence has also made it a frequent topic of public debates about obesity,Ãâà corporate ethics and consumer responsibility.2 Vision To be the best and leading fast food provider around the globe Mission McDonalds brand mission is to be our customers favorite place and way to eat, and improve our operations to provide the most delicious fast food that meet our customers expectations. Values Our values summarized in Q.S.C. V.. Provide good quality,Ãâà services to customer.Ãâà Have a cleanliness environment when customer enjoys their meal. The value of food product makes every customer is smiling. (2001, 705) For instance, there are certain groups in Europe and the United States that clamor for state actions pertaining to the health implications of eating fast food. (2005) They have indicated that harmful elements like cholesterol and adverse effects like obesity are attributable to consuming fast food products. On the other hand, the company is controlled by the individual policies and regulations of operations. Specific markets focus on different areas of concern such as that of health, worker protection, and environment. All these elements are seen in the government control of the licensing of the restaurants in the respective states. For instance, there is an impending legal dispute in the McDonalds franchise inÃâà Indiawhere certain infringement of rights and violation of religious laws pertaining to the contents of the food. The existenc e of meat in their menus inÃâà IndiaÃâà is apparently offensive to the Hindu religion in the said market. There are also other studies that points to the infringement of McDonalds Stores with reference to the existingÃâà employmentÃâà laws in the target market. Like anyÃâà businessÃâà venture, these McDonalds stores have to contend with the issues ofÃâà employmentÃâà procedures as well as their tax obligations so as to succeed in the foreign market. Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâ Ãâ B.Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Economic Factors Ãâ Organisations in theÃâà fast food industryÃâà are not excused from any disputes and troubles. Specifically, they do have their individual concerns involving economic factors. Ãâà Branches and franchises of fast food chains like McDonalds has the tendency to experience hardship in instances where the economy of the respective states is hit by inflation and changes in theÃâà exchange rates. Ãâà The customers consequently are faced with a stalemate of going over their individual budgets whether or not they should use up more on these foreign fast food chains. (2004) Hence, these chains may have to put up with the issues of the effects of the economic environment. Ãâà Particularly, their problem depends on the response of the consumers on theseÃâà fundamentalsÃâà and how it could influence their general sales. Ãâà In regarding the operations of the company, food chains like McDonalds tend to import much of their raw materials into a specific territory if there is a dearth of supply. Ãâà Exchange rate fluctuations will also play a significant role in the operations of the company. As stated in the paragraph above, McDonald stores have to take a great deal of consideration with reference to their microenvironment. The companys international supply as well as the existingÃâà exchange ratesÃâà is merely a part of the overall components needed to guarantee success for the foreign operations of McDonalds. Moreover, it is imperative that the company be cognizant of the existing tax requirements needed by the individual governments on which they operate. This basically ensures the smooth operations of the McDonalds franchises. In the same regard, the company will also have to consider the economic standing of the state on which they operate on. The rate at which the economy of that particular state grows determines theÃâà purchasingÃâà power of the consumers in that country. Hence, if a franchise op erates in a particularly economically weak state, hence their products shall cost higher than the other existing products in the market, then these franchises must take on certain adjustments to maintain the economies of scale. Ãâ C.Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Socio-Cultural Factors Ãâ Articles on the international strategies of McDonalds seem to function on several fields to guarantee lucrative returns for the organisation. Ãâà To illustrate, the organisation improves on establishing a positive mind-set from their core consumers. Ãâà McDonalds indulge a particular variety of consumers with definite types of personalities. ( 1994) It has also been noted that the company have given the markets such as the United Kingdom, an option with regards to their dining needs.Ãâà (2005) pointed out that McDonalds has launched a sensibly valued set of food that tenders a reliable level of quality for the respective market where it operates. Ãâà Additionally, those who are aged just below the bracket of thirty-five are said to be the most frequent consumers of McDonalds franchises. ( 2005) Ãâ The multifaceted character ofÃâà businessÃâà nowadays is reflected in the harsh significance of the information on the subject of the existing market. Ãâà This procedure is essentially identified in the field as market research. (1997) Ãâà Information with regards to the appeal and potential fields of the market would double as obstructions to the success of the company if this area of the operations is neglected. Ãâà In the case of McDonalds they establish a good system in determining the needs of the market. Ãâà The company uses concepts of consumer behaviour product personality andÃâà purchasingÃâà decisions to its advantage. (Ãâà 1998) It is said to have a major influence on the understanding of the prospective performance of the organisation in a particular market. (2000) Ãâ D.Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Technological Factors Ãâ McDonalds generates a demand for their own products. (2006) The companys key tool for marketing is by means of televisionÃâà advertisements. Ãâà There are similarly some claims that McDonalds are inclined to interest the younger populations more. Ãâà The existence of play spots as well as toys in meals offered by the company shows this actuality. ( 1995) Other demonstration of such a marketing strategy is apparent in the commercials of they use. Ãâà They employ animated depictions of their characters like Grimace and Hamburglar. Other advertising operations employ popular celebrities to promote their products. Ãâà The likeÃâà has become endorsers for McDonalds worldwide loving it campaign. Ãâà Moreover, the operations of McDonalds have significantly been infused with new technology. Ãâà Elements like the inventory system and the management of the value chain of the company allows for easy payments for their suppliers and other vendors which the individual stores in respective markets deal with. The integration of technology in the operations of McDonalds tend to add value to their products. Basically, this is manifested in the improvements on its value chain. The improvement of the inventory system as well as its supply chain allows the company to operate in an international context. Ãâ E.Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Legal Factors Ãâ There has been the recurrent bellowing in opposition to the fast food industry. Ãâà This has similarly made McDonalds apply a more careful consideration on their corporate social responsibilities. Ãâà On the whole, this addressed the need of the company to form its corporate reputation to a more positive one and a more socially responsible company. ( 2005) The reputation of McDonalds is apparently a huge matter. Ãâà Seen on the website of the company, it seems that they have acquired strides to take in hand the key social censures that they have been berating them in the past decades. Ãâà The company has provided their customers the relevant data that they need with reference to the nutritional substances of their products. Ãâà This is to attend to the arguments of obesity charged against the products of the company. Ãâà In the same way, the consumers provided freedom in choosing whether or not they want to purchase their meals. This is tied up with the socio-cultural attributes of the market on which they operate. For instance, operations in predominantly Muslim countries require their meat to conform to theÃâà HalalÃâà requirements of the law. In the same regard, those that operate in countries in the European Union should conform to the existing laws banning the use of genetically modified meat products in their food. Other legal concepts like tax obligations, employment standards, and quality requirements are only a few of important elements on which the company has to take into consideration. Otherwise, smooth operations shall be hard to achieve. Ãâ Ãâ F.Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Ãâà Environment Ãâ The social responsibilities of McDonalds on the state are influential to the operations of the company. Ãâà These entail accusations of environmental damage. Ãâà Among the reasons why they are charged with such claims is the employ of non-biodegradable substances for their drinks glasses and Styrofoam coffers for the meals. (1997) Several civic groups in Hong Kong have made actions to make the McDonalds franchises in Hong Kong aware of the rather copious use of Styrofoam containers and the resultant abuse of the environment. Ãâà (1997) further indicated that in 1995, McDonalds Hong Kong went over the Styrofoam used by both Australia and the United States combined. McDonalds has a strong marketing strategy, being supervised by the mother company, no matter at which part of the world the outlet is. The marketing strategies of McDonalds guarantee lucrative proceeds for the company. It is said that McDonalds focuses to a specific kind of consumers with particular kinds of personalities.Ãâà Otherarticles have pointed out that McDonalds has given the market with an alternative diningexperience.Ãâà Debres noted that McDonalds has launched a sensibly priced set ofmeals that gives an unfailing level of quality for the public. In America the DSM was published to widespread controversy as it was believed that 67% of the DSM-5 taskforce had direct links to the Pharmaceutical Industry and substantial profits were being pocketed. 1.3 Two alternative frameworks for understanding mental distress are Biological/Medical and Behavioural. The first describes psychological problems as resulting from physical causes such as brain injuries and defects and hereditary factors like Downââ¬â¢s syndrome or Cerebral Palsy. INTRODUCTION TO EMPLOYEE EMPOWERMENT AND PARTICIPATIVE WORK REDESIGN PROGRAMS Employee empowerment and participative work redesign programs have been a part of the recurring discussions by authors in the recent years. The two phrases have been called as twin and have been deployed as worthy innovations and as necessary features to enhance movements including Total Quality Management and Business process re-engineering (Beirne themes M., 2006). Empowerment is considered to be an important ingredient in high performance organisations today. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Employee Empowerment And Participative Work Redesign Programs Business Essay" essay for you Create order The meaning and definition of the word EMPOWERMENT can be interpreted in various ways by different people. As cited in Michelle.K et al (2000), Parker and Price (1994) define empowerment in an organizational context as the belief that one has control over decision making, Conger and Kanungo (1988) define empowerment as increased feelings of self-efficacy, Thomas and Velthouse (1990) and Spreitzer (1995) expand the definition to include the meaning of the work, self-efficacy or competence, self determination or choice about actions, and impact on work outcomes, Kieffer (1984) define empowerment as long-term adult learning and development with the goal of increasing participatory competence, i.e. the ability to play an active role in shaping ones environment. Thus including all the above definitions, empowerment can be defined as A developmental process that promotes an active approach to problem solving, increased political understanding, and an increased ability to exercise control. For the British government and European Union members, the main consideration was given to a humanist element that included fairness and consensus, which focused on economic empowerment; absorbing the building up of economy, community and citizens. (Commission of the European Union, 1998 and Department of Trade and Industry, 1999), (cited in Beirne, M. 2006 p2). To cope up with the ever increasing pressure of globalisation and demand for higher efficiency, a lot many organizations have decided to apply the strategy of restructuring. As cited in Isaiah O.et al, from past many decades most of the work on job design and redesign has been based on the studies of Hackman and Oldham (1976, 1980). As per them the motivational potential in a job is dependent on a number of tasks dimensions such as task variety, autonomy, identity, significance feedback and skills variety. It is generally assumed that a job that has higher value of above mentioned attributes has a higher motivating potent ial than a job that is not. In the present era Employee Empowerment and Participative Work Redesign Programs are becoming very popular as they not only ensure job satisfaction and job security at the workplace, but also foster power in people to carry any type of task and cope up with any kind of challenge with confidence IMPORTANCE OF EMPLOYEE EMPOWERMENT AND PARTICIPATIVE WORK REDESIGN PROGRAMS Employee empowerment and Participative work redesign programs forms the basis for every organisation today ,as it allows and help the organisation to achieve its objectives and help in transfusing reflective learning in the employees and gear them up to contribute their best towards the progress of the organisation. In the past century, workers were disempowered under Taylorism and Fordism as they followed the approach of disconnecting the doing and thinking aspects of work. Both Taylor and Ford utilised their ideas in the restructuring of American steel plant and ultimately led to increased productivity and output and also had been able to distribute goods to a large population. Though there were some good aspects associated with Fordism and Taylorism but dehumanising impact on employees was the main source and area of concern. Workers were being affected by the monotony of work, health issues due to cumbersome tasks and by the lack of job satisfaction. Ford himself discovered the power of empowerment along with various other organisations, as employees were dissatisfied with their jobs and were forced to go in search of other alternatives. This lead to the softening of the regime and various incentives and bonuses were offered to retain employees and in Fords case salary hikes and socialisation programmes to induce a sense of commitment towards his company were conducted for the immigrant workers (Beirne, 2006). Many organisations today still follow the authoritarian management styles as were followed decades ago by Taylor and Ford. This part of essay is in reference to my personal experience of working in an Information Technology firm. I joined the firm some three years back with a lot of expectation in mind in regards to job satisfaction, opportunity to learn and enhance my skills. With the passage of time I started to realise that the people within my department were afraid of our Group project manager and as soon as he was seen around people woul d pretend to be working on some important task which in actual was not the case. The atmosphere there was always full of fear and tension. Also during the times of recession a couple of years back employees were forced to take over tasks forcefully, they were transferred to the location away from their homes and were forced to abide by policies that were of no use within the company. Due to fear of losing their jobs employees became puppets of the higher management and had to agree on everything they were asked to do. All these factors finally resulted in high iteration rate within the company as employee were dissatisfied with the quality of work and always feared job insecurity .Thus the employer eventually had to roll back all the unnecessary policies, had to pay high incentives to the employees and considered promoting their employees to retain them within the organisation. Many organisational changes were done to foster in employees satisfaction from their jobs. A lot many o rganisations have benefitted themselves by empowering its employees and launching various motivational programmes. One of the live examples of the same is the BMW Mini plant in Oxford. The company claims to have saved about 10.5 million pounds in two years. The employees within the firm were asked to generate ideas for improvement and a target for the same was given to all its employees. If the target was achieved successfully then the employees were rewarded with the various bonuses. Empowering employees to generate ideas for companys improvement indirectly encourages the employees to work at its best for the success of the organisation. www.ethicalcorp.com Second example of employee empowerment is the company named Toshiba that started an innovation programme in year 2001 to increase its performance and in return saved nearly à £3 billion worldwide and over à £10 million in the UK. There were a couple of challenges faced by the management initially as it was difficult to m otivate employees to generate ideas. Also a number of innovative projects in the company had been a result of bringing together employees from across the departments in the organisation. www.ethicalcorp.com Recalling the case study shown in class, on Wedge wood organisation, the company suffered major losses due to ineffective management, employees had no say in the organisation and also the employees were not satisfied with their jobs. The employer in order to bring change within the company decided to spend millions of pounds on buying robot machines that were not efficient and had teething problems , neglecting his employees. The company should have gone with the criteria of empowering its employee, and through participative work redesign programmes it could have saved the company from wasting millions of pounds on the useless robot machines and also would have fostered in its employee satisfaction towards their job. MAIN CHALLENGES OF MANAGING INNOVATION AT WORK Innovation forms the basis for any organization who wants to survive in todays restless environment. Organisations today should always strive to renew the process they offer and deliver to their stakeholders. Benefits of innovation include targeting the best customers, holding large market share, increased shareholder return and high employee satisfaction and morale. The word innovation originated from Latin word innovare which means to make something new. The most comprehensive definition was given by U.K. department of trade and industry who see it as the successful exploitation of new ideas. An employer may face a lot many challenges while managing innovation at work. The main challenges that can be faced by an employer are as below: What is the need to change? : Organizations always face a big question of why do we need to innovate. The reason for the same is just to stay within the market for a long term and it may involve configuration of the products, processes or m arkets all over again. In each case it involves learning and unlearning and it requires strategic direction to focus this process. Also the organizations have to focus on the core area of process, where change is needed. What is it that needs to be changed: Every firm needs to realize the areas that require changes? Even after the firms have recognized the need for continuous innovation they may face a number of challenges in setting up a required innovation agenda. After an innovation agenda is selected still there are a lot many challenges faced in order to ensure continuous improvement in order to succeed. Continuous Learning: Continuous learning is necessary for every single organization as it helps them in their development and for this a good practice model is very much required. In the good practice, it is easier to know how an organization can create a series of new products and services. A few features that belongs to a good practice model includes team working, learn ing and improving continuously, requirement of project management structures and a need of well built structure for continuous flow of processes. Irrespective of the various issues that we find while innovating processes it will always be a subject of change over period of time. www.indianmba.com Communication: Communication holds a major challenge when the innovation within the organization is to be considered. An employer has to make sure that there occurs exhaustive knowledge exchange between all the divisions and departments associated with bringing in the change in order to successfully accomplish the tasks. In case the flow of information between the various units and departments, on the needs to change, is not clear it may prove hazardous to the organization. Thus innovation requires proper channel of communication so as to get feedback and approval of all the employees before going ahead and making a change. One fine example that defines the real meaning and importa nce of term innovation was Danish Company named LEGO which is most famous brands in the world when it comes to making childrens toys. Initially company only focused on creating simple wooden toys but the main turning point for the company was in 1940 when it started making plastic toys that had parts that could be set apart and re-assembled. The design was not initially successful but soon with the help of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen and his discussions with the USA buyers an idea of an architectural innovation popped up which demanded a product platform on which many different designs could have been build. The design took some time to be accepted but by 1958 it became a reality. A series of product, process and market innovations of adding wheels, figures, targeting new market segments helped the company to evolve in the market. By 1968 LEGO toy system opened its theme park as well and it started to attract over 600,000 visitors in its first year itself. The company grew exceptiona lly well only by bringing on the basic changes to its design. Thus innovation within an organization can help an organization to reach acme of heights. The main challenge that can be faced by any organization while making any innovative change is to determine the after affects of the change and would then help the organization flourish as is expected from such a change. www.managing-innovation.com Another case that determines the importance of innovation at work is to be detailed now. Henry Ford started producing cars somewhere back in 1903 and faced success only when the Model T was launched. The main contribution which he made was to change the approach of manufacturing and marketing of cars i.e. the new changes that could have been brought to the already existing cars in the market. Henry, involved rethinking the design of the car and his aim here was to develop the Model T in such a way that it could be purchased by a large section market. He designed and standardised t he whole car along with the constituent elements. He even aimed at targeting a large market in competition to the already existing brands in the market from other companies. Ford and his team of engineers even rethought the overall production operations and it was based on a number of innovations which reduced the need for skilled labour, mechanised much of the assembly process, integrated preparation and manufacturing operations for both components and finished product and systematised the entire process. By following all the changes they were able to generate high volumes of cars thereby increasing productivity and generating high revenues to the company. www.managing-innovation.com Considering the case study on nursing empowerment as discussed in class, the main aim of this the case study was to improve the health care of the patients. For this reason the concept of primary nursing was brought into consideration which aimed at allocating nurses to the fixed number of patien ts so that they can give utmost attention to the health of patients they have been allocated to. Primary nurses were supported by a team to cope up with the work consisting of assistant nurses and ward coordinators. The project faced a number of challenges where in the ward coordinators did not pass on the value information to the nurses taking care of the patients ultimately not allowing them to have full control of their duties. Also the supervisors moved the patients and nurses from one ward to another that disrupted the functioning of the project. Nurses lost their patients due to such a scenario and also lost all the power to talk their heart out in case of any problem. Consultants also faced a lot of issues dealing with the scenarios as they had to go about making rounds of the wards dealing with different nurses and their patients. The above project could have successfully worked had there been a couple of changes been made to functioning of the system. Managing a system requ ire a great deal of efforts and innovating changes take a lot of effort as with changes may arise a lot of factors such as job dissatisfaction, politics within the company, frustrations , unwillingness to work and monotony at work place. However my greatest fear is time management Time management is very important in any area of life as success and failures are built upon it. It is my fear here as I have to juggle School, Work, family at the same time and meet up with the demands of each, allotting quality time to each section. We will write a custom essay sample on What Do You Look Forward? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Language barrier on the other hand possess a little bit of challenge to me as I have to advance my writings from undergraduate level to graduate level. My plan to overcome this fear is to be organized from day one which entails knowing my schedule, plan and stream line my activities via time table format. Make effort to follow my time table, remove procrastination from it but allow flexible time for any unforeseen circumstances that might come up along the way. Specific educational experience I encountered was when I started school here in a traditional class room, it was very difficult for me to comprehend what my instructors was teaching and also for them to understand me because of my accent. My fear was how to succeed in my education when I donââ¬â¢t understand the classroom lectures. I am even too afraid to ask questions fearing that they will not understand me or even laugh at me. I am fine studying my textbook at home but it is not enough as major and important points are highlighted in the lecture notes. So my first step in addressing this fear was to meet with my instructors after class and tell them my problem. Second step was to use the learning resources available at the college and attended series of passport classes for international students. This tutoring classes and one on one session with most of my instructors took all my spare and family time but it did pay off at the end of the semester with good grades. These resources helped me to overcome my fear, understand my instructors, and ask questions in class, improved on note taking skills and above all good grades. These units, represent the amount of ââ¬Å"heat energyâ⬠it takes to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. When we burn the food items and capture the heat in the water, we will use the following formula, our initial and final temperatures and we can calculate the energy released from each food item. FORMULA: Q = t*m*cp Q= heat energy absorbed t = change in temperature ,? C m = mass in grams, g cp = specific heat capacity ( 4. 184 j/g ? C for water) It states clearly that there will be considerable error in this experiment, due to some of the heat given off from the food being burned, and it was absorbed by the glass beaker and some energy escaped into the air. This gave us results that are lower than the accepted values. PROCEDURES: After gathering my equipment from the labpaq and required items from my home. I started with my measurements. I first measured my 100mL empty glass beaker on my scale from the labpaq and recorded that in data table 7. 1. Next I filled the beaker with 50mL of tap water, I measured the water and the beaker together and recorded those measurements as well. Next, I used my sheet of aluminum foil and placed my burner stand on it and placed my beaker with the water upon the stand and placed my thermometer into the beaker, after a minute or so I took a initial measurement of temperature of the water and recorded it. Now I needed to get a mass measurement of my first item, for the experiment. I started with the marshmallow and a fork. I took a mass measurement of the marshmallow and the fork separately and recorded it in data table 7. 1 Next I placed the marshmallow on the end of my fork and then I weighed those two together and recorded my measurement. Now it was time to add the heat, I used a extended grill lighter for my heat source. I clicked the lighter and carefully placed the marshmallow into the flame, once it caught and started to burn, I placed the burning marshmallow under my beaker, while allowing it to burn most of the way down, I had my oldest daughter help me stir the thermometer in the beaker. Once it had burned out, I took a new measurement of the fork with the burnt residue on it and recorded that measurement. I set the fork in the sink and checked the temperature of the water in the beaker, and recorded the final temperature. There is cleanup in between each food item to be burned, and you must start with fresh water and a new initial temperature for the remaining items in the experiment. I followed the above steps for the walnut and the potato chip and recorded their measurements in the data table 7. 1 as well. Once all my food items were burned , measured and recorded. I then proceeded to my calculations for analysis in this lab and recorded the remaining results in the data table 7. 1 below. DATA TABLE 7. 1 CALORIC CONTENT OF FOOD/ OBSERVATIONS FOOD ITEM DESCRIPTION|MARSHMALLOW|NUT|POTATO CHIP| Mass of food and holder-initial|40. 4g|18. g|16g| Mass of food and holder-final|38. 8g|16. 3g|13. 5g| Mass of food burnt|1. 6g|2. 0g|2. 5g| Mass of beaker|66. 5g|66. 4g|66. 5g| Mass of beaker and water|107. 2g|108. 2g|108. 2g| Mass of water|40. 7g|41. 8g|41. 7g| Water temp. initial|23à °C|22à °C|22à °C| Water temp. final|31à °C|72à °C|32à °C| Delta T à °C, change|8à °C|50à °C|10à °C| CONCLUSIONS: Altho ugh I still do not like ââ¬Å"burning thingsâ⬠, this one was rather neat. I am overweight and lately have really been watching calories, and by doing this experiment I have grasped a better understanding of how energy Is released from food and how to properly calculate caloric content. Although I do not believe I will be using any of these methods to calculate my caloric intake, I will just stick to my labels provided for me and hope that they are without error. ANSWERS TO END OF LAB QUESTIONS: A. The food that tested with the most energy per gram was the potato chip. B. My results were somewhat lower than the averages, but according to the discussion prior to the lab it stated that this would be a possible issue, due to the heat loss in the air, and the beaker absorbing some of the heat as well. C. The type of reaction used in calorimetry, would be a ââ¬Å"combustion reactionâ⬠, which we learned about back in chapter 5. A chemical process may either absorb or release energy, and many times this energy is in the form of heat. In experiments we often need to know how much heat is absorbed or released when such a process takes place. The measuring of that heat is known as . calorimetry determines how much heat is absorbed or released by noting the temperature before and after the process. By determining the temperature difference, we are then able to calculate how much energy was absorbed or released. In order to measure the amount of heat a reaction absorbs or releases, a calorimeter is often used. calorimeters are sometimes used in calorimetry to calculate the heat gained or lost in a combustion reaction. D. The products from the reactions are CO2 and H2O. E. The products were released into the air, or the atmosphere. F. 1. In using the data that the student collected about the cashew nut, we would calculate the total energy released by the combustion of the nut by using the increase n temperature of the water, the mass of the water and the specific heat capacity of water. We will use this formula: FORMULA: Q = t*m*cp 58576 joules 2. In order to calculate the energy released per gram of the cashew nut consumed in the reaction we calculate as follows: 58,576j / 0. 55g = 106502 / 4. 184 = 25455 or 2. 5 cal 3. This is a key factor in the effectiveness of nearly all of Hughes early work the stark contrast between life and death, vitality and lethargy. In poems such as The Jaguar, Roarers in a Ring and Six Young Men, there is a severe and often brutally sudden transition between the two extremes. I found all of these poems, particularly The Jaguar, intriguing and enthralling; the respect that Hughes has for animals and humans who live their lives to the full is admirably enormous. In The Jaguar, the poet describes his disregard for the majority of the animals in the zoo he visits because they have accepted captivity and surrendered to a life free from care, excitement and interest. Most of the animals have lost the magic of their natural instincts. He disdainfully describes them with words like indolence and sloth and uses the simile like cheap tarts to describe the parrots. This insinuates that they are willing to strut and show off to anyone, as they have lost any sense of pride and self worth they once had. However, there is one creature that excites and captivates the crowds, and as the title of the poem suggests, has also left a lasting impact on Hughes. Instead of lazing around idly, the sleek black Jaguar spins from the bars and hurries enraged. Despite being deprived of his natural environment and his freedom, the Jaguar is full of movement, actively bursting with power and energy. Hughes is markedly enthralled by the way that the Jaguar seems to create his own space, even within the confinement of his cage à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" describing the creature as having the world rolling under the long thrust of his heel. Hughes uses powerful and potent images such as the drills of his eyes and the prison darkness to make the poem come alive. The poem has an underlining high regard for the Jaguar; it is clear he retains his sense of dignity and power and is still very much a wild beast. He has certainly not accepted his life in captivity. Hughes accentuates the difference between the Jaguar and the other animals by describing the reactions of the crowd, who stare mesmerised at the Jaguar as a child at a dream. This simile is effective as it creates a real sense of awe and amazement; children cannot often be captivated so strongly, suggesting the subject is something truly incredible. Contrarily, he implies that the majority of the cages contain nothing but sleeping straw, and visitors tend to rush past such animals without even noticing their existence. As well as the movements of the crowds, the difference between lively and lethargic is very much highlighted by the metaphorical language used. The curl of a snakes body is described as a fossil à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" not only appropriate because of the coiled shape but also because it gives the impression of being very old and in a state of inertia. Similarly, the apes are of no interest to the crowds because their only motions are idle actions to pass the time; they merely yawn and adore their fleas in the sun. To my surprise, even the tigers and the lions are too fatigued with indolence to excite an audience. The simile still as the sun demonstrates the arrogance and immovability of the Lions, and also illustrates their colour. All these static, lazy images are countered by the rage, strength and ferocity of the Jaguar who does not limit his spirit to the boundaries of his cage. The pace and rhythm of the poem is quite fast with short sharp words, often monosyllable to stress the simplicity of the trouble-free animals. In contrast, the pace slows down in the third verse when talking about the Jaguar, with considerably longer sentences and words such as mesmerised. Roarers in a Ring is a more subtle observation, in the form of a narrative. .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b , .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .postImageUrl , .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b , .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b:hover , .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b:visited , .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b:active { border:0!important; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b:active , .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u093a701e8fb0c7375e4baf74291e4a3b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: How To Get A Date EssayIt is Christmas Eve and a group of farmers are attempting to conceal their sorrow with alcohol and false laughter. The situation the poet describes is immediately identifiable, making it all the more hard-hitting. The poem begins on a cold note, describing a starving fox a symbol of the harsh realities of nature and death. Descriptions like The moor foamed like a white running sea create an atmosphere that is bleak, cold and uninviting. In the second verse the farmers huddle around a fire, which instead of sounding cosy, sounds as if they are hiding from the outside world. Later, it is suggested that their unceasing laughter is not genuine but is like a ball being tossed in the air. Instead of actually being happy they are forcing themselves to laugh because there is nothing else they can do, and ultimately because they are afraid. The poet talks as if he is watching them and says, You would have thought that if they did not laugh, they must weep. He is saying that they are scared to drop the pretence of joviality, as they dont want to face the prospect of sober misery. Thinking rather than laughing loudly means they must realise what their fate is à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" lest silence drink blood. In contrast to the way they toss laughter, and their lives up, towards the end of the poem there is a strong feeling of downward movement, with lines like bottomless black silence through which it fell and blindly, rowdily balanced, took their fall. Despite their apparent liveliness, there is a constant undertone of sorrow. In the sixth verse the poet depicts how the farmers grand bellies shook and then suddenly the line Oh their flesh would drop to dust at the first sober look. This cruelly reminds the reader how vulnerable and weak they are compared to the sharpness of the air new as a razor and the power of the moor and the world in general. The poem draws to an end with the deaths of the farmers, and pointedly closes with the insignificance of this; as the world went whirling still à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" it carries on unchanged by their absence. Another of Ted Hughes poems entitled Six Young Men displays a more direct change from descriptions of the life and the mens enthusiasm to their tragic deaths in the First World War. The poem observes a photograph taken forty years ago which pictures the six men who died only months later. The mens expressions are timeless and although the men are very much dead, the photo is undoubtedly alive The men were at the peak of their lives and the contrast between their vigour and anticipation with the tragedy of their death is shocking. Hughes describes each of the young men in turn by how they looked in a photograph, their beautiful surroundings, their camaraderie and lust for life itself. However, at the end of each verse, a brief yet cuttingly effective line reminds the reader of the mens fate à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" their faces are four decades under the ground ends the second verse and Forty years rotting into soil ends the fourth. This pattern is repeated, as the poet touchingly recalls how their clothes would not be fashionable today, but at the time their shoes shone, which reflects their respectability. It also makes an alarming contrast as in life they had taken pride in their appearance but in death, they have spent forty years rotting in the soil. There is a more detailed description of how the men died and Hughes reveals that he knew them and also the scene in the picture. It makes the reader wonder what relationship he was to them. I speculated whether he had lost all these friends in the war. Was he the one behind the lens who had taken the picture? The poem reflects on the passing of time, and it is states that nothing lasts. The tone of the poem is bitter but invariably becomes more softly spoken when Hughes is recalling memories of the men going on a Sunday jaunt. .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 , .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .postImageUrl , .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 , .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780:hover , .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780:visited , .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780:active { border:0!important; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780:active , .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780 .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2329422773106b183f457edeef6f0780:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Alchemist EssayHe reflects on the irony of their lives and talks about the mangled last agony one of the men suffered in hospital, while for some nobody knows what they came to. In the last verse, the poet claims that six celluloid smiles are no less alive than any man, but at the same no less dead than a prehistoric creature. Hughes feels very strongly about the photograph; it is a paradox, a contradiction that that they should be smiling, when with hindsight he sees too many reasons why they should not. Hughes remembers them twice à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" in death shot by rifle or trying to save a friend, and preserved in his cherished photograph which has not wrinkled their faces or hands, and they live in his memory, young forever. All of these poems touch on the contrast between vitality and death, either comparing the two directly, or focusing mainly on one of them. It is obvious that Hughes found victory in the untamed will of the Jaguar, and admiration for the remarkable lust each of the Six young men had for life à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" whereas he scorned at the farmers who led pitiful, timid lives which ended as uneventfully as they had existed. This is the unequal intervention between persons and it is a negative action towards members of a certain group. The bases of favoritism include: civilization. disablement. age. societal category. gender. sexual orientation. wellness position. household position and cognitive ability. The prejudiced practise used in the instance of Jeta is predjudice. This is judging person and doing an premise without holding any solid grounds to back up the opinion. on the footing of their visual aspect or what group they belong to. Jeta is sing this as her instructor is doing a false premise about her thought that she is lazy and blue as her criterion of public presentation in school assesments is diminishing. There are many lending factors that can take to the predjudice that Jeta is sing. One of these factors is societal background. Jeta comes from a rough background. lives entirely with her female parent who is a individual parent and her male parent is in prison. Another factor taking to predjudice could be socialisation. This is when the media create humbling stereotypes about specific groups of people. The media assumes that if person is in prison. they are associated with bad behavior and are automatically given a negative feeling on. As Jeta is related to person in prison. the instructor is presuming that sheââ¬â¢s every bit as bad and discriminates against her. The instructor is about blaming the male parent state of affairs on the hapless school work produced by Jeta. Stereotyping is a widely held but fixed oversimplified image or thought of a certain type of individual. Pigeonholing can hold a demetrial consequence on the person involved. They involve generalisations about the most common features of members of the group. There are many factors which could propose why Jeta is being stereotyped. The first is societal classification. This is sorting people into groups based on common properties that persons portion. In relation to Jeta she is being stereotyped as lazy because the criterion of her school assesments are dropping. She is besides being stereotyped as naughty and this could be due to the societal facet that her male parents in prision significance she is being percieved as this blue kid. Another base for favoritism is age. Age favoritism occurs when person is treated below the belt due to their age without any given justification or logical thinking. The fact that the kid concerned in this survey is of rather a immature age of 9 old ages old means she is more vunerable to age favoritism and this normally occurs because the kid is seen to hold less societal power. Jeta is sing age favoritism because she is seen to hold less of an authoritive figure compared to her instructor. Children in todays society are more likely to confront favoritism due to their addiction on grownups and the determinations that are made for them. Children experience favoritism on other evidences including race. gender. societal category. wellness position. disablities and many more. Jeta is being stereotyped as this lazy character and due to her age. the instructor isnââ¬â¢t listening to her despite being told legion times by Jeta that she can non see the board from the dorsum of the schoolroom. Jetaââ¬â¢s age could be an index as to why she is being stereotyped as she is undistinguished compared to the instructor and has little or no power so her sentiments and positions are merely ignored. Another prejudiced practise that Jeta is confronting is inequality. This is where people are non treated the same because some persons have more power. authorization. money etc. Jeta is sing this as she is non being granted the same chances to instruction and rights to larn as everyone else in her category. Due to this inequality she could be left in a vunerable place as she could be at a hazard of falling behind in category and making even worse in appraisals than earlier. The chief base for favoritism is this instance survey is Jetaââ¬â¢s diability. She has haples s sight and this explains her low criterion of work in lessons. She is being discriminated for holding this disablement and this could ensue in her feeling vunerable and cause low ego regard. She is being segregated from the remainder of the category being sent to the dorsum of the schoolroom and this could strike hard her assurance. This is besides doing the state of affairs worse as Jeta will non be able to concentrate on the undertakings set in category as she can non see what is is being taught. Alternatively of supplying Jeta with the right extra acquisition support she requires. the instructor has placed her right at the dorsum of the category. segregated from her other schoolmates. The Disability Discrimination Act ( DDA ) makes it improper to know apart against person who has a disablement. This act is covered by most sectors including the instruction sector which means it should be covered in all schools and administrations. The DDA screens eyesight jobs so Jetaââ¬â¢s demands should be met. Initially. Jetaââ¬â¢s instructor is being improper as she isnââ¬â¢t seting to the DDA criterions to accommodate Jetaââ¬â¢s demands. If no alterations are made. Jet aââ¬â¢s seeing could deteriate and decline. Jeta presently has no spectacless or any signifier of equipment to assist imporve her seeing so being at the dorsum is non assisting the state of affairs in respect to Jeta. The men who feature in advertisements for rugby have protruding biceps and broad chests like weights lifters. In those advertisements, they use force and excessive energy when countering their counterparts. The subtext in these advertisements implies that women lack the physical capacity to play rugby and this is incorrect. In fact, some women are better body-built than some men are. Using physical capacity as a basis for not featuring women in rugby entrenches the traditional patriarchal stereotype that women are weaker than men are (Harrington p4). Exemplified tactics in rugby are another concern in considering the explicit absence of women in the arena of rugby. In traditional patriarchal societies, women were not allowed to engage in some activities because they were thought of as not having the mental aptitude required to handle them (Harrington p9). A similar notion is implied when rugby media coverage and advertisement conspicuously miss to mention anything about women. This is a notion that has been disproved, clearly, by the modern woman who ventures into almost every activity to which they were previously restricted and rugby is not an exception. Discipline is more of a personal matter than one that depends on sex and gender. Individual differences play an important role in a personââ¬â¢s predisposition to discipline. However, some commentators have observed that women are more likely to exercise restraint than men are. If this were to be used in comparing male and female rugby players, females would rate better males. Discipline alone cannot make a good rugby player without the other elements and as such, it would be unfair to exclude women from the game if they succeeded in blending all the elements (Harrington p4). Additionally, the extent to which a player exercises discipline in a game is influenced by their goals and objectives in the game and if women Ellis Besthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02531806416892216155noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341690322264343012.post-18718082875200133112020-02-04T15:46:00.001-08:002020-02-04T15:46:03.103-08:00Salary Negotiation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 wordsSalary Negotiation - Essay Example The service of professionals has a market value that is measured based on the median pay of professionals with similar educational and professional background which is a baseline that helps a person determining how much labor of a person is worth. This essay discusses various strategies a professional can utilize in the middle of a salary negotiation and analysis the scenario of the person with a salary demand with counter move of the firm mentioning a specific budget for the position which is lower than the professionalââ¬â¢s minimum salary demand. The salary negotiation scenario has many alternative solutions the person can choose to gain an upper hand and maximize the salary offer from the employer. The first argument that must be brought to the negotiating table is the employerââ¬â¢s improper conduct of setting up an interview with full knowledge of the minimum salary requirements to then bring a wild card of an alleged company budget for the position. The time of a person is worth money, the intervieweeââ¬â¢s time is subject to the economic law of opportunity cost which stipulates that the value of a personââ¬â¢s time can be measured by comparing what the person could be earning if he were doing something else (Varian, 2003). There are online sources that allow a person to determine their market value based on multiple variables such as experience, education and geography. The website Salary.com provides in depth free reports about thousands of job profiles. For example an accountant with cero to two years of experience is categorized an Accountant I; this category for professionals living in the state of Florida has an average salary of approximately $37,000 per year (Salary.com, 2008). In the salary negotiation scenario the person with the salary demand should have based his initial minimum requirements on the median salary for his profession based on a verifiable source. In order to understand the affect of the concept of social exclusion in relations to persistent poverty and equality we need to first answer 1) what does the concept of social exclusion denote? 2) Does the process of overcoming social exclusion take into account dealing with persistence poverty and inequality or does it overlook these aspects in particular persistent poverty and inequality of children in the context of the contemporary British society? Below, section 1 will outline the provenance of the social exclusion concept, its relations to persistent poverty and inequality in the contemporary British Society particularly children, section 2 outlines the status of children in persistent poverty and equality in the British society. The concept of Social Exclusion and in its relations to persistent poverty and inequality Social exclusion can be referred to industrialized countries (notably France in the 1970) and can be taken back to Weber, who identified exclusion as one form of social closure (Parkin 1979) It has been defined as the process through which individuals or groups are wholly or partially excluded from the society in which they live. Similar but in different light (Jordan 1996) highlights the continuous exclusion of one group by another group. The term social exclusion where it is believed France it was used to identify those who fell through the web of the social protection/social insurance system and were excluded by the state (Lenoir 1974, Duffy 1997) known as (Le exclus the excluded) in the 1970 included disabled persons, lone parent and the unemployed especially young adults (Evans 1998). Social exclusion is described as a shorthand label for what can happen when individuals or areas suffer from a combination of linked problems such as unemployment, poor skills, low incomes, poor h ousing, high crime environment, bad health and family breakdowns (SEU 1997) Also Duffy (1995) suggests that it is the inability to participate effectively in economic, Social, political and cultural life, alienation and distance from the mainstream society, this in a way clarifies the link between persistent poverty and inequality in the society and in particularly the unemployed are both poor and not in the same stature as others in the society and thus placing them in the process/institutions put in place to overcome these problems and help these individuals live within a society even though not equal creates a persistent poverty for the children that rely on the adults benefiting from these processes. At the same time the process or institutions put in place to overcome these social exclusions are not specifically designed to overcome persistent poverty or inequality. Child Poverty and Inequality in the contemporary British society Persistent poverty is defined as occurring when children experienced poverty (severe or non severe) in three out of five years for which they were analyzed i Children experiencing poverty were all more likely to: Have been in no worker household for one year Lived in rented accommodation for five years Had adults in the household who were ill for between three and four years Lived in midlands Received benefits for three to four years and lived in household with an average of three or more children (Adelman et al). Impact of poverty in children includes, deprivation of education, lack of proper health and children below the age of five die each day due to causes that can be prevented. Poverty is related to negative outcomes like ill-health and shorter life expectancy and this is true for relative (average income, lack of materials to fully participate in an accepted daily life) and absolute poverty (absence of enough resources to make complete someone). World Health Organization (2008) reports shocking inequalities within the countries and cities also persist. The life expectancy of child born in Carlton in Glasgow, Scotland is 28 years less than that of a child born few miles away in Lenzi. The 2007 UNICEF report on child wellbeing ranked the UK bottom out of 21 OECD countries. Bradshaw J argues that child poverty is the inevitable consequences of economic restructuring, globalization, demographic transitions. But it s then the consequence of policy-successive Conservative government ignoring rising child poverty, committed as they were to trickle down theories and their aspirations to reduce public expenditure and cut taxation? Levitas (1998) identifies three different discourses of Social Exclusion, First approach is a redistributive Discourse (RED) which derives from critical social policy, and which sees social exclusion as a consequences of poverty, thus Peter Townsend argued that poverty should not be understood in terms of subsistence, but in terms of peoples ability to participate in the customary life of society: individuals, families and groups can be said to be in poverty when their resources are so seriously below those commanded by the average individual or family they are, in effect, excluded from ordinary living patterns, customs and activities(Townsend,1979,p32).the indicator for social exclusion in RED is low income. She adds Social integration Discourse (SID) is participation in paid work, therefore young people of working age should participate in labor market. Unemployment or economic inactivity indicates social exclusion. The third approach is a moral underclass discourse (MUD), which so cial exclusion is used as a substitute not for poverty or non employment, but for the underclass .This discourse presents the socially excluded as the morally distinct from the rest of the society and does not address inequality. Since the election, there has been increasing tendency to talk about poverty and social exclusion, a shift which can only be welcomed, since it puts both firmly back at on the political agenda. But opportunity for all (Blair, 29 January 1996) A reduction in the proportion of children living in workless households, for households of a given size, over the economic cycle. A reduction in the proportion of children in household relatively low incomes A reduction in the proportion of children in households with low incomes in an absolute sense. A reduction in the proportion of children in household with persistently low incomes. Makes no separation between poverty and social exclusion nor does the poverty and social exclusion (National Strategy) Bill, introduced in parliament under the 10- minute Rule on 10th February 1999. Mud posits strong connection between poverty and social exclusion, but sees the causes of poverty as lying in cultural and moral/self exclusion rather than the other way round. (Levitas, 1998) Conclusion Referring back to the concept of social exclusion and its relation to persistent poverty and inequality, I would argue that although the concept of social exclusion concentrates on those excluded it does address the issues that lead to poverty and inequality but has not been designed to directly tackle the issues of persistent poverty and inequality in the contemporary British society and in particular the children. Poverty is not only deprivation of economic or material resources but a violation of human dignity too. The UN provides a broader definition of poverty: a human condition characterized by the sustained or chronic deprivation of the resources, capabilities, choices, security and power necessary for the enjoyment of an adequate standard of living and other civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. (UN, 2001). The UN definition brings together two important and related themes in contemporary understandings of poverty: the capability approach of Nobel-prize winning economist Amartya Sen and the human rights approach. Inequality is sometimes seen as a form of poverty, and the capability approach to poverty shows us why. By definition, any society with inequality means that some people have less money, resources or power than others do. These people will often be described as relatively poor but there are sometimes questions about whether they are absolutely poor (Barber, 2008; p3) Ellis Besthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02531806416892216155noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341690322264343012.post-72640514556349945512020-01-19T08:33:00.001-08:002020-01-19T08:33:03.687-08:00How a Friend Change My LifeFriends Really Do Change Your Life I believe friends can impact your life. Whether negatively or positively, the people you surround yourself with have a significant impact on where your life takes you. Specifically, I believe my best friend got me to where I am today. I am now and have been on a path to success since she entered my life. Four years ago, I was a trouble maker, rule breaker and all out rebel. The girls that I surrounded myself were known for their bad attitudes and party habits.I have watched their lives get destroyed because of the decisions they made. I believe by stepping away from them, I have become a more structured and overall better person. During my friendship with my former group of friends, I had no rules. I stayed out hours past midnight, threw parties without my parentââ¬â¢s permission or knowledge, and didnââ¬â¢t care who I associated myself with. Thankfully, I was level-headed enough to never give in to the pressure of trying drugs or alcohol. I w as only in it for the fun.Four of these girls, however, lacked the better judgment I was lucky enough to have. They drank constantly, smoked pot, and ditched school almost every day. After several years of this, I had had enough. Unfortunately, by associating myself with this group I had somewhat ruined my reputation. Even though I stayed away from drugs, people at school assumed I was just as crazy as the rest of the girls. The girls eventually dropped out of school and I was left trying to find people that would accept me.I knew of another girl at school that I hadnââ¬â¢t talked to in a few years. She was in Honors classes and theater, so we rarely crossed paths. Our parents, however, were best friends and always encouraged her and I to hang out but we never found much in common. After separating myself from my former group, she and I became friends. I quickly found myself realizing what true friendship really was and was surprised to have found it with someone I had once thoug ht to be so different from me. Four years later, we are best friends and closer than anyone could imagine.Through the lives of my former friends, I have seen what my path could have been. I could have been without a high school education, without a job, without my dignity and without a true friend. I have learned that who you associate yourself with can have a strong impact on your future. By becoming friends with someone I thought was on the right path, I, myself, can see a bright future ahead of me. I am extremely thankful to have found someone who helped me get on this path. I believe that without her, I would not be who I am today. It will also evaluate each of these theories and make reference to their practical application. In doing so, the essay will set out how parents, child psychologists, social workers and teachers can aim to understand childrenââ¬â¢s behaviour.à As Haggerty (2006) states, ââ¬Å"The theory supporting psychodynamic therapy originated in and is informed by psychoanalytic theory.â⬠The psychoanalytic approach to therapy was developed by Sigmund Freud, an Austrian psychiatrist. Freudââ¬â¢s model proposed that an individual has three elements to their psychological self: the ego, superego and id. The id is the most primitive, consisting of largely unconsciousà biological impulses. The ego uses reality and itsà consequences to modify the behaviour being urged by theà id. The superego judges actions as right or wrong basedà on the personââ¬â¢s internal value system.à (Strickland ed., 2001, p.637)à According to Freud, children progress through various psychosexual stages of development. He claimed that, at particular points in the process, a single body part is particularly sensitive to erotic stimulation (Stevenson, 1996). The first stage begins at birth and continues until approximately 1 year old. It is classified as The Oral Stage because the mouth and lips are the main focus, displaying biting, sucking and chewing behaviour. The Anal Stage comes next and usually occurs between 1 and 3 years old. Toilet training encourages the child to enjoy expelling faeces. At this point the id will be satisfied by this instantaneous pleasure and will be in conflict with the ego and superego, which are concerned with controlling bodily functions to satisfy social expectations and practicality.à The Phallic Stage occurs between approximately 3 and 5 years old and contains one of Freudââ¬â¢s most controversial theories, the Oedipus complex (or Electra complex in females). His theory states that the child becomes focused upon the genital area and experiences turmoil in the form of an unconscious desire to possess the opposite-sexed parent and eliminate the same-sexed parent. What Freud termed the Latency Period comes next. He believed that sexual drive lay dormant due to repressed impulses and desires. At this stage, children focus upon non-sexual activities and form same-sex friendships.à At approximately 12 years old, a child faces puberty and enters what Freud classes as The Genital Stage. The focus returns to the genitals but this time in relation to others. There is now an interest in relationships and exploring sexuality. When a child is unable to resolve the conflicts that occur at any of these stages, fixation can occur. ââ¬Å"If needs are not met in a satisfactory way or if the individualââ¬â¢s conscience or superego cannot deal with impulses and drives to love and to hate, then complex character traits emergeâ⬠(Errington and Murdin, 2006). For example, oral fixation may result in an adult displaying pessimism, sarcasm or gullibility, whilst phallic fixation may result in recklessness or fear of commitment. Freud, like many who begin a movement, now receives much criticism. One area of weakness is the limited scope of his research, as his therapy work mainly focused upon upper middle class women. Another popularly criticised aspect of Freudââ¬â¢s work is the emphasis on sexuality as, in his view, everything seems to stem from expression or repression of the sex drive (Boeree, 2006). Despite criticism, Freudââ¬â¢s methods underpin the commonly held belief that childhood experiences are hugely important to personality development. In practical terms, those working with children today place great importance on ensuring that a childhood contains opportunities to develop, to learn the difference between right and wrong, and to learn to appropriately act upon or repress urges.à Behaviour therapy is defined as ââ¬Å"A collection of psychotherapeutic techniques aimed at altering maladaptive or unwanted behaviour patterns, especially through the application of principles of conditioning or learning.â⬠(Colman, 2006). The main influencers of this theory were Pavlov, Watson and Skinner. Ivan Pavlov, later to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology for his research into the digestive system, observed that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦dogs would salivate upon seeing their keeper, apparently in anticipation of being fed.â⬠(Strickland ed., 2001, p.478). Pavlov extended his experiment and rang a bell immediately before food was served to the dogs. Eventually, the dogs would salivate upon the bell ringing, even if no food was then served. This led Pavlov to develop an understanding of conditioned responses and unconditioned reflexes.
